Tracking and attribution

Tools that record orders for ad platforms and analytics, and tools that decide which channel gets credit, and why the first group matters more than the second.

When you need this

  • Google Ads, GA4 and your store never show the same revenue and you do not know which to trust.
  • Tracking broke after a theme or checkout change and nobody noticed for weeks.
  • Ad blockers and consent are hiding a growing share of orders from the platforms.
  • You spend across several channels and every one of them claims the same orders.

What it costs, in general terms

Server-side tracking tools are usually priced per month by event volume. Attribution platforms are priced by store revenue or order volume and often need an annual contract. Check the vendor's pricing page for current plans.

How to choose

  1. 01Fix the order count first: compare platform purchases to store orders for the same week before buying an attribution tool.
  2. 02Prefer setups that send real order values and order IDs, so deduplication is possible.
  3. 03Ask how the tool handles consent and what it does when a visitor declines.

The questions every tool is compared on are on how we grade.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Google Ads, GA4 and Shopify show different revenue?

They count different things: GA4 counts sessions it could track, Google Ads counts conversions it can attribute within its windows, and the store counts every order. Some gap is normal; a large one points at a tracking problem.

Do I need server-side tracking?

If a meaningful share of orders is missing from your ad platforms, server-side tracking recovers some of it by sending events from your server rather than the browser. Check the gap first, then decide.

Is an attribution platform worth it for a small store?

Usually not until spend is spread over several channels and the questions are about budget allocation. Until then, clean tracking and a blended view of spend against store revenue answer most questions.
