Freelancers and consultants
Website development freelancers
Independent Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce developers for theme work, custom features, fixes and small migrations, and how to brief one so the work survives the next update.
When you need this
- The theme needs changes your team cannot make and an agency quote is too large for the job.
- A campaign needs landing page templates, a bundle builder or a feature the theme does not have.
- Tracking, the product feed or site speed need a developer's fix, not another app.
What it costs, in general terms
Freelance developers usually charge by the hour, by the day or by a fixed quote for a defined piece of work, with support agreed separately. Ask what counts as a change request and how fixes after launch are handled.
How to choose
- 01Ask for live stores they worked on and what exactly they built on each.
- 02Ask how they document their changes, so the next developer or your theme update does not undo them.
- 03Confirm you own the theme and the code and that work is done on a duplicate theme before going live.

Frequently asked questions
Freelance developer or development agency?
A freelancer suits defined jobs and ongoing small changes at a lower cost. An agency suits full builds and migrations where design, development and project management all need covering. Many stores use both at different times.
How do I protect tracking and the feed during development?
Agree a pre-launch check with the developer: conversion events firing, Merchant Center feed unaffected, redirects in place. Keep a copy of the working theme and test on a duplicate before publishing.
What should a brief include?
The pages or features in scope, examples of what you want, the platform and theme, the apps installed, who approves the work and the deadline. The clearer the brief, the smaller the quote.
