Freelancers and consultants

Google Ads freelancers and consultants

Independent Google Ads specialists who run Shopping, Performance Max and Search for online stores themselves, and when one person beats an agency team.

When you need this

  • Your spend is too small for an agency minimum but too important to leave on autopilot.
  • You want the person who pitches to be the person who works in the account every week.
  • An agency manages the account and you want a second pair of eyes on it.

What it costs, in general terms

Freelancers and consultants usually charge a flat monthly fee, an hourly or day rate, or a percentage of ad spend, with shorter notice periods than agencies and often no minimum spend. Ask for the fee model, the notice period and the hours you get in writing before you compare.

How to choose

  1. 01Ask to see a Shopping or Performance Max structure they built and have them explain why it is split the way it is.
  2. 02Ask how many accounts they run at once. One person has a ceiling, and you want to know where it is.
  3. 03Confirm the account, Merchant Center and conversion tracking stay in your name, with the freelancer added as a user.

The questions every freelancer is compared on are on how we grade.

Frequently asked questions

Freelancer or agency for Google Ads?

A freelancer gives you one senior person at a lower monthly cost, with the risk that they are the single point of failure. An agency gives you cover and process at a higher fee. For stores with one main channel and moderate spend, a strong freelancer is often the better fit.

What should a Google Ads freelancer report?

Spend, revenue by order date, return on ad spend and the changes made, every week or every month, in a format you can read without them. Ask for a sample report before you start.

How do I check a freelancer's claims?

Ask for a reference you can speak to and for a screen share of an account they run, with the client's permission. Published case studies are their own claims; a conversation with a current client tells you more.
